Invader Comics has announced a new Kickstarter campaign for the trade paperback edition of Animals by writer Keith Foster and artist Nico Miérez, and The Beat can reveal an exclusive preview from the zombie horror. Set in the Pacific Northwest, the story explores the fallout of a mutagenic virus infecting and reanimating the area’s deceased animal population, with a particular focus on what happens to humans when they’re faced with this new and terrifying threat.
Animals follows two government officials forced to figure out why the animals are turning on humans, where the outbreak originated, and how to end it before it’s too late. The publisher describes the comic as “equal parts Cocaine Bear and Night of the Living Dead with a dash of The X-Files for good measure.”

“I really wanted to explore the dynamic between humanity and the animal kingdom, and what would happen if that delicate balance were upset,” said Foster. “At the same time, I wanted to tackle a grisly horror that could shock and entertain while addressing those deeper issues. Animals is the by-product of those explorations, filtered through the lens of Nico’s dark, noir-inspired art, and I’m excited to share the full story we’ve been developing together over the last couple of years.”
Invader Comics editor-in-chief Michael Perkins said, “We’re all about developing a space where different creators can explore a variety of genres and tell the kind of stories that burn inside them. Aside from being one of the key members of the Invader team, we’ve seen great success with Keith’s work on Kodoja and Three Protectors – as well as the single issues of Animals, which sold out at distributor level on their release – so it’s a thrill to share the complete saga with readers as we raise the stakes and amp up the horror.”
The Animals trade paperback is available via Kickstarter.
