We got the first look at the Diamond booth! ….or more accurately, what is in the space formerly held by the Diamond Comic Distributors and Diamond Select Toys booths. As we previously reported, Diamond’s new owners, Sparkle Pop, have thus far shown remarkably little interest in carrying on either DCD or DST’s previous business functions. So just what would take place in these spaces has been the subject of much industry speculation
Although both spots were listed as their previous owners, we can now confirm that at least one booth will be a Diamond Select Toys booth.
Our spy on the ground, “Mata Hari,” reports that this is in the previous DST space. The larger, Diamond booth remains ………empty at the moment. But there is carpeting so something is coming!
It’s 10 am PST as I write, and many folks have just arrived to start setting up their booths (unless you have a big fancy one in which case you probably got there on Sunday.) Booths don’t go live until 6 pm PST for Preview Night, so there is plenty of time to fill that empty space.
Meanwhile, the very presence of a booth for Diamond Select is somewhat…..surprising. The collector toy making arm of Diamond was effectively shut down on May 16th, when Ad Populum/Sparkle Pop took control of their assets. Since then, collectors and toy dealers have been expressing sorrow and alarm over the loss of the company – while no real word has come out aside from announcements of previous orders being cancelled. Just a few days ago, this announcement went out:
What will be in the booth then? A close look shows logos of tiy companies, some previously carried by Diamond’s toy division.
Could it be leftover stock, like liquidated stock, y’know? Wholesale toys?
Obviously much more to come on this! We’ll update the story as more emerges from the floor of San Diego Comic-Con 2025!
