According to ex-WWE writer Vince Russo, there is a huge problem plaguing the sports entertainment juggernaut, and he made a huge, surprising, and some might say controversial claim about the use of AI in the future of wrestling.

On the final episode of Writing with Russo, host Dr. Chris Featherstone spoke to Vince Russo about the general issues plaguing the sports entertainment giant. Following rumors (that were shot down) about WWE using AI for storylines, Vince Russo gave an interesting take.

Vince Russo was personally blown away by the Open AI-owned ChatGPT, and believes that it's the future of storylines and the only way WWE can be saved going forward:

"AI is perfect for them [WWE]. I'm telling you, bro, they should start getting storylines off AI. I did a show with EC3 yesterday, and he was telling me about ChatGPT. I put in, 'Chat, can you give me a format of a wrestling/sports entertainment show in the style of Vince Russo?'. Bro, it spat out this format to a T. I'm reading this and I'm like, are you freaking kidding me? I'm telling you, they need to institute AI tomorrow. They're not going to hire nobody, they're not going to hire anybody that they're afraid is going to be better than them. AI can literally save them, bro."

What was the full context of WWE allegedly using AI for storylines?

The reports around AI-generated storylines being used for programming in 2025 led to a lot of backlash, but the context of that aforementioned report is very important.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE had hired Cyrus Kowsari as its Senior Director of Creative Strategy, and he was reportedly heavily involved in the company's transition to AI-based storylines.

However, soon after this, in a Q&A on Fightful Select, it was clarified that WWE had been using AI for years, but as an assistant for tasks such as data management, figuring out when two wrestlers last faced each other, etc. The report of the company using AI-generated storylines was shot down.

Just like the host Dr. Chris Featherstone mentioned on the episode of Writing with Russo, there is likely too much pride within the creative team to adopt AI. If it does come out that the sports entertainment giant is using AI-generated storylines, then the reaction is likely going to be worse than the first time around.

Wrestling veteran journalist Bill Apter, who has been covering wrestling for over half a decade, warned against the use of AI for storytelling, stating that taking away the human touch is going to negatively affect the product, while also adding in the ethical implications of using a technology that threatens to take away several jobs.

This is because there is a large consensus online that the creative quality of the product on RAW and SmackDown has steeply declined in 2025, and it appears to be translating into weaker ticket sales. This comes very shortly after President Nick Khan stated that the increase in ticket prices is "appropriate" for the marketplace.
