It wouldn’t be preposterous to suggest the Los Angeles Lakers were one of the busiest teams in the league on Sunday, as they officially signed newcomer Collin Sexton and re-signed their standout No. 2 scoring option, Austin Reaves (Kevon Looney’s signing will likely become official soon).
After the Sexton signing, former Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga, who’s believed to be a prime candidate to join Los Angeles this summer after getting his $24.3 million team option declined by the Atlanta Hawks, received a $20 million Lakers contract update.
“That Kuminga two-year, $20 million contract offer is off the table,” Lakers Nation’s Daniel Starkand reported on X/Twitter. “Would need to be a sign-and-trade at this point.”
Starkand’s report comes after his co-worker, Trevor Lane, noted that the Lakers’ current cap situation will force them to make a trade or a minimum signing to bolster their roster.
With the Stein Line’s Jake Fischer previously stating (Friday) that the Lakers, who could offer the Hawks Jarred Vanderbilt and a 2032 pick swap for Kuminga in a sign-and-trade, may have to get another team involved with the Hawks not thrilled with the idea of acquiring Vanderbilt, it’s safe to say Los Angeles has a clearer idea of what it’ll take to land Kuminga this summer.
No one said it would be a walk in the park, but if the Lakers truly want to land the 23-year-old high-level athlete and forceful downhill attacker by any means necessary, they’ll make it happen.
