The entire NBA offseason has seen some of the biggest names go elsewhere in free agency or through blockbuster trades. However, there have also been some veterans searching for their next place late in their careers.
There are veterans at the end of their careers who are just hoping to influence young players, with that being their ticket to getting another contract. For Kelly Olynyk, he was still working out with the San Antonio Spurs this summer.
“Last week, Spurs CEO R. C. Buford stated that 8-10 members of the Spurs roster were joining Victor Wembanyama in Paris to work out. A few of the photos released on social media show Kelly Olynyk as part of the squad," Pounding the Rock's Jeph Duarte wrote during the offseason.
The stretch big man has had very limited interest from NBA teams this past offseason. The New York Knicks were one of the few teams interested.
“The Knicks will likely fill their 14th roster spot by signing a big man to a minimum contract. Kelly Olynyk are among the top remaining centers on the market who should be of interest to New York. The Knicks are roughly $3.3M below the second apron," NBA writer Jake Weinbach wrote.
Olynyk was expected to take a training camp invite somewhere, but he didn’t. Instead, it has been reported that Olynyk will leave the NBA to play for an organization co-founded by Los Angeles Lakers player Luka Doncic.
“Busy week for BC Roma in its debut season … The Italian club co-founded by Donnie Nelson and Luka Dončić has signed Kelly Olynyk after the 13-year NBA veteran played in San Antonio last season,” The Stein Line’s Marc Stein wrote.
This is an interesting move for Olynyk late in his career, but it just seems like he had nowhere to go at this time. BC Roma was just founded in 2026, so the big man will be a part of something new.
The former Spurs veteran will be looking to make an impact for the new club. He has years of experience and has played some meaningful minutes throughout his NBA career. This is a great move for Olynyk with nothing being available in the NBA.
