The New York Mets are having a strong season and are shaping up to be contenders. One of their key players from last year could soon sign with the Texas Rangers.
J.D. Martinez played in 120 games last season. He did not hit for a high average but had an OPS+ of 106 and hit 16 home runs. The Mets did not bring him back in the offseason, and he remains unsigned. He is a veteran player, six-time All-Star and three-time Silver Slugger.
His free agency could be coming to an end soon. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Martinez has a non-guaranteed contract offer from the Rangers. Heyman previously reported that Martinez was still training in hopes of playing this year.
The Rangers have been hit hard by injuries, but they are not out of the postseason race. The team is just 1 1/2 games out of a wild card spot. Martinez could be a good depth piece for them.
Martinez was an All-Star in 2023. He is not long removed from being recognized as one of the best hitters in baseball. His value to a team is more as a designated hitter at this point. He has not played in the outfield since 2023 with the Dodgers.

With Wyatt Langford and Jake Burger dealing with injuries, Martinez could bring some help to the Rangers' offense. He has hit 331 career home runs, and still has some gas in the tank to help a team.
