The LeBron James free agency saga is shaping up to be one of the biggest storylines of the offseason, with his decision expected to be watched closely around the NBA. The Los Angeles Lakers initially appeared likely to bring him back, but that may no longer be the case.
James has spent more than two decades in the NBA, playing for just three teams throughout his career. However, that could change at the conclusion of free agency, as he may end up joining a fourth franchise.
“It might even be more likely than not that he leaves Los Angeles than stays with the Lakers,” Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer wrote.
Before free agency even began, James was reportedly being pursued by Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors. The possibility of Curry and James teaming up has long been one of the NBA's biggest "what if" scenarios, and it appears the Warriors star is doing everything he can to make it a reality.
“Pairing him with Stephen Curry is going to be something that the Warriors are going to pursue over the next few weeks… It seemed very doubtful, it seemed low percentage, now it’s kind of questionable. Now there’s going to be some legs to this… That same source told us that Steph is planning on meeting and talking with LeBron about potentially joining the Warriors over the course of the next few weeks leading up to free agency,” NBA insider Brett Siegel said.
A new report has revealed that James is expected to meet with the Warriors this week to discuss a potential deal.
“LeBron James is preparing to meet with the Warriors this week as an unrestricted free agent. After Draymond Green opted out today, Golden State has the necessary flexibility to sign LeBron and trade for Anthony Davis. LeBron leaving the Lakers is gaining significant traction,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
If James joins Golden State, he would form a star trio alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. The Warriors understand their championship window is limited, making an aggressive pursuit of James a logical move as they look to compete for another NBA title.
There are still hurdles to overcome before a deal could become a reality, but James' meeting with the Warriors could provide more clarity about his future. If he ultimately signs with Golden State, it would mark a stunning move to the franchise he battled against in the NBA Finals for several years.
