Day 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft begins on Saturday, and Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders is still available. Yes, really.
After two days of the draft and three rounds, Sanders is still on the board and five quarterbacks have been called ahead of him. Each of Cam Ward, Jaxson Dart, Tyler Shough, Jalen Milroe and even Dillon Gabriel were selected before Sanders in one of the most surprising skids in NFL Draft history.
It's safe to say everybody is surprised by Sanders' tumble, even Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton.
The Broncos coach had a lot to say about the Buffs QB still being around ahead of Day 3, per James Palmer.
“We sat there, I watched right behind him throwing and watching the receivers, he had an outstanding Pro Day," Payton said about Sanders. "This thing is surprising. There’s nothing that ever takes place during this period of time that surprises you...I think we all were surprised and yet the talent, holy cow. I think if you’re a team that needs a quarterback, and we kind of know at the start of the draft who those teams are."
Payton has seen Sanders plenty throughout his football career, and not just at Colorado, either.
"Again I saw him when he was in junior high, and then I saw him when he was in high school, and then I saw him when he was a sophomore in high school come practice on their way to Florida. So I’ve had the chance, I know Deion, I felt like I grew up watching him play. There’ll be a chip on his shoulder and beware because this guy’s going to play in this league. I think it’s hard for any of us to explain what other people are looking for. We focus on what we’re looking for and yes, I think it’s surprising," Payton continued.
It is arguably the most shocking NFL Draft slide in recent memory, and everybody is wondering when Sanders will hear his name called. For now, he will wait, but Payton is among the many who is puzzled by the turn of events in Green Bay.
