ESPN ranks Falcons’ roster among NFL’s three worst entering 2026

The Atlanta Falcons have no shortage of star power, but ESPN believes the overall roster still has significant flaws. In its preseason roster rankings, ESPN placed Atlanta’s roster as the third worst in the NFL, citing uncertainty at quarterback and lingering defensive concerns despite a talented offensive core.

ESPN  identified running back Bijan Robinson as Atlanta’s biggest strength. Robinson has steadily developed into one of the league’s elite offensive weapons, improving his production in yards per carry, receptions, touches and total yards during each of his first three NFL seasons.

Over the past two years, Robinson has finished no lower than fifth among NFL running backs in carries, rushing yards, receptions, touches and scrimmage yards. He has also scored at least 10 touchdowns in consecutive seasons, solidifying himself as the centerpiece of the Falcons’ offense. Veteran addition Brian Robinson Jr. gives Atlanta another dependable option in the backfield.

ESPN sees major questions across Falcons’ 2026 roster

However, ESPN believes quarterback remains the team’s biggest concern. Former first-round pick Michael Penix Jr. and veteran Tua Tagovailoa are expected to compete for the starting job entering training camp.

Penix has shown flashes but has yet to establish himself as a consistent NFL starter after throwing 14 touchdown passes in 14 games while battling accuracy issues. His recovery from a torn left ACL suffered in Week 11 last season also raises questions heading into 2026. Meanwhile, Tagovailoa arrives in Atlanta looking to revive his career after the Miami Dolphins absorbed a record $99 million in dead money to move on from the former Pro Bowler following an underwhelming 2025 campaign.

ESPN also identified rookie cornerback Avieon Terrell as Atlanta’s X-factor. The second-round pick could earn a starting role opposite his brother, A.J. Terrell Jr., after veteran Mike Hughes struggled in coverage last season.

Another player to watch is veteran edge rusher Samson Ebukam, who could play an expanded role if second-year pass rusher James Pearce Jr. faces league discipline.

Despite ESPN’s low ranking, the Falcons believe an improved running game and better defensive play could help prove the skeptics wrong in 2026.
