Eric Bieniemy’s wife out of ICU in major health update after alleged shooting by son

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided a positive development on the condition of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s wife, Mia Bieniemy, after she was allegedly shot several times by their son on Sunday night. 

Reid said she was out of the ICU and was “doing great’ when he met with reporters on Wednesday. 

“She’s doing better and great from where she was. [She’s] out of the ICU unit and making progress, so we’re happy about that,” he said, per ESPN. 

Bieniemy has been in the hospital since the alleged incident took place, in which the couple’s son Elijah Zion Bieniemy was arrested in connection with.

He’s been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling, and has been held without bond in Loudoun County, Virginia. 

Eric Bieniemy has been with his wife since Monday and Reid said the focus was making sure the offensive coordinator could concentrate on his family. 

There is no timetable for when he will report back to the team and Joe Bleymaier, the Chiefs’ passing game coordinator, has taken over for Bieniemy while he’s away from training camp. 

“I just want to make sure she’s taken care of — and Eric [Bieniemy III], too,” Reid said, mentioning the couple’s other son who has cerebral palsy. “[Eric Bieniemy’s] got the other part of that that he’s got to sort out. Let him take care of that. 

“We stay in touch with him and keep him abreast of everything that’s going on. He’s got the tape that he can watch in whatever spare time he’s got there.”

Deputies responded to a report of a shooting around 7:32 p.m. on Sunday and found an adult female at the scene suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. 

Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman told WJLA that Mia Bieniemy had been the one to call 911 after she had been shot, though he did not name her specifically. 

“She had called in – the mother, who we know – had called in the shooting, and it was involving the son, so that’s where we’re at right now,” he said.

Eric Bieniemy was at Chiefs training camp at the time of the incident.
