Enzo Maresca sets his sights on signing World-Cup winner for Chelsea

After beating Manchester United to the punch in signing Liam Delap, Enzo Maresca looks set to repeat the trick, this time with a goalkeeper.

If reports are to be believed, Chelsea are weighing up making a move for one of Manchester United’s top targets after being given the go-ahead from manager Enzo Maresca.

The Blues are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper and are ready to swoop in with a move for Emiliano Martinez, who has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Journalist Christian Martin has claimed that Maresca has asked the club to bring Martinez in to become their number one next season, with assistant manager and former Blues goalkeeper Willy Caballero also giving the seal of approval.

He said: “Chelsea wants Emiliano Martínez as their starting GK, and Enzo Maresca has asked! Willy Caballero has also given the go-ahead. The player wants to stay in England, so it’s an option for Chelsea.”

A potential move to Stamford Bridge could see Martinez link up with compatriot Enzo Fernandez. The pair were crucial in their nation being crowned world champions in 2022.

Given that there could be a face-off between Manchester United and Chelsea for Martinez’s signature, it might come down to the player’s ambition.

However, if Chelsea do enter the race for the player, they have a clear advantage over the Red Devils as they will be playing in the Champions League next season, and they are more likely to compete for the Premier League title.
