Does Emma Stone Believe in Aliens? She Says...
A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet, but Emma Stone couldn’t go by just anything.
One year after the Bugonia star admitted she wishes she could go by her birth name, Emily Stone, she shared that she wasn’t always dead set on her now-famous professional moniker.
“I actually adopted a stage name for six months,” Emma revealed during an Oct. 22 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “Because the Screen Actors Guild, it’s like a business bureau, you can only have one person with that name. I was 16, and I decided I wanted to be ‘Riley,’ so I was ‘Riley Stone.’”
And while the two-time Oscar winner thought it was a “beautiful” name, an awkward encounter she had made her settle on her current title.
“I had a guest part on Malcolm in the Middle,” she recalled. “And they kept going, ‘Riley,’ ‘Riley,’ and I had no idea who they were talking to. Truly. So I was like, ‘I cannot be Riley.’ It came out of nowhere. I was just like, ‘Cool name. I’ll just be Riley.’”
But ultimately, Emma just didn’t see herself as a ‘Riley.’
“So I then changed it to ‘Emma,’” she explained, “because it’s close enough to ‘Emily.’”
Indeed, ultimately, Emma was listed as her current stage name in the credits of the 2005 episode of the sitcom—after previously appearing as “Riley Stone” in a guest starring appearance on Medium, starring Patricia Arquette.
Of course, while Emma can’t get herself to respond to ‘Riley,’ she really has no issue with any nickname.
“I've been saying Emily my whole life,” she explained during a 2024 appearance on Today. “You can call me whatever you want. You can make up a name!”

However, Emma confessed that she overall does have partial preference for her birth name.
“I would like to be Emily,” she told The Hollywood Reporter that same year. “That would be so nice.”

"My dad's name is Sterling Brown Jr., my grandfather is Sterling Brown Sr.,” he said during an April 2025 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. "I wanted my own name and it felt like Sterling was an old man's name."
But years after his dad died from a heart attack, the This Is Us alum decided to revert back to his first name as a way to honor his father.
"Because he passed away when I was 10, by the time I turned 16 and I hadn't heard his name for five, five-and-a-half years,” he continued. “I was like, ‘I kinda just want to hear that name again.’ So I asked people to call me Sterling."
