(Bloomberg) — Power prices are surging in the US East after the largest US grid operator declared an emergency as soaring temperatures descend on the region.

Electricity in the Washington DC suburbs that include power-hungry Data Center Alley has topped $1,000 per megawatt hour, almost four times the price across the broader region. Baltimore Gas & Electric prices were trading above $900 while Exelon’s Pepco service area was near $870.

PJM Interconnection LLC has issued a Maximum Generation Emergency and Load Management Alert for Tuesday, asking power plants to brace for high demand. The alert underscores how quickly power supplies can tighten when extreme heat strikes a region already grappling with rapid demand growth from data centers.

Meanwhile, the US Energy Department issued an emergency order authorizing PJM to deploy backup power generation at data centers and other major facilities to help prevent blackouts amid the heatwave.

Temperatures in Washington DC are forecast to reach 100F (38C) on Tuesday, almost 25F above normal, according to AccuWeather Inc. Across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast — the bulk of PJM’s area — at least 90 daily records are expected to be tied, broken, or challenged through Wednesday, the US Weather Prediction Center said.

Heat advisories have been posted from New Hampshire to Delaware, including in New York City, where the high is forecast to reach 95F Tuesday and feel closer to 99F, the National Weather Service said.

“The core of the heat will be along the Megalopolis area,” said Scott Kleebauer, a forecaster with the US Weather Prediction Center. “It’s definitely an anomalous heat, especially for the magnitude of the heat.”
