Eagles signing former Buccaneers top pick to address depth in 2026

The Philadelphia Eagles don't have a ton of holes on the roster, but the ones they do have are glaring.

There's perhaps no bigger need currently than edge rusher. The team lost Jaelan Phillips in free agency and it's unknown if Brandon Graham is retiring again or not. Regardless, the team needs at least two pass-rushers before the season begins.

Well, the team added one today. It may not be the sexiest addition, but it's an addition nonetheless, and it's more exciting than some may think.

That signing is Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. NBC Sports' Dave Zangaro was the first to have the news.

Tryon-Shoyinka is a former first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The defender never really lived up to his draft status, but he was a solid player for a couple of seasons. Now, the Washington product will have another chance to prove he belongs in the league.

Joe Tryon-Shoyinka could end up playing a role in 2026

Tryon-Shoyinka showed flashes in his first few years in the league. The defender had at least four sacks in each of his first three seasons and had double-digit quarterback hits in two seasons.

However, Tryon-Shoyinka landed with the Cleveland Browns last offseason, and that never worked out. As a result, the defender was traded to the Chicago Bears at the deadline, but he didn't find much success there either.

Now, Tryon-Shoyinka goes to a respected defensive coaching staff surrounded by playmakers. There will be almost no pressure on the former top pick, so there's a real possibility he can produce again.

The Eagles have playmakers at OTHER spots on defense, but the edge-rusher spots aren't the deepest. Tryon-Shoyinka, thus, not only has a solid shot to make the team, but a solid shot to contribute as well.

As of now, Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalyx Hunt are the top options on the edges for the Eagles. Tryon-Shoyinka likely won't leap either of those guys, but he could at least be a solid rotational piece.

The Bucs, and presumably other teams, though highly enough of Tryon-Shoyinka to use a first-round pick on him. The Eagles have been good at getting the most out of players, meaning this signing could end up being more than a depth addition.
