A cautious start to free agency left the Philadelphia Eagles with a glaring need at EDGE rusher, and that surprisingly remains the case the week after the NFL Draft.
The Eagles welcomed a 10-player 2025 draft class, but only one of those prospects, sixth-round selection Antwaun Powell-Ryland out of Virginia Tech, was deployed as a pure outside pass rusher in college.
Per usual, GM Howie Roseman and the Eagles have received high grades for their draft haul as a whole, but after losing both Josh Sweat (free agency) and Brandon Graham (retirement) from the depth chart this offseason, Philly was expected to go bigger at EDGE.
Sterling Xie of Pro Football Network believes there’s still time, predicting Roseman and the Eagles will dip back into the free agent pool and bring in eight-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Von Miller.
“Even if Nolan Smith Jr. ascends to a No. 1 edge rusher, Philly doesn’t have a clear starter to pair with him,” Xie wrote for PFN. “Second-year pro Jalyx Hunt flashed as a rookie but played only 23% of the defensive snaps. Azeez Ojulari and Josh Uche are decent sub-package options, though neither will contribute much on run downs.
“However, if the Eagles really want to super-charge their pass rush, Miller makes sense as a ring-chasing vet. Miller is still a useful passing-down weapon, as he had six sacks and a 16.1% pressure rate for the Bills last season. That pressure rate ranked 11th out of 212 players to rush the passer 150+ times. For a team that should be playing from ahead most of the season, Miller would be an excellent situational weapon.”

Miller’s name has been thrown around this offseason as a potential target for Philly, and it makes sense given Miller’s pedigree and position. There are multiple reasons, however, why we should expect the Eagles to pass on this player.
For starters, Miller’s long past his prime. He just turned 36, and he came nowhere close to living up to the $120 million contract he signed with Buffalo in 2022. It’s possible Miller could be interested in chasing another Super Bowl at a discounted rate for one season, but it’s hard to see that coming to fruition with Philly, which has been in cost-cutting mode since the start of the new league year.
Miller also doesn’t exactly fit Philly’s character profile, judging off Roseman’s comments during this year’s pre-draft process. Roseman said he won’t even watch, scout or consider bringing in prospects with a history of domestic violence, and Miller was suspended for four games in 2024 due to an alleged incident with his then-pregnant girlfriend.
The Eagles should definitely be looking to add competition at EDGE, as Bryce Huff was a disaster last year and every addition to that group so far this offseason has been a dart throw. They’re better off passing on Miller, however, given his questionable recent history both on and off the field.
