Eagles’ A.J. Brown makes announcement on 2028 Olympic plans

With the NFL expected to pass a rule this week allowing players to participate in flag football at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the focus will soon shift to: Will the league’s top superstars really step away from their annual commitments to chase gold for Team USA?

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown made his plans clear in a recent sit-down with the local media.

If given the opportunity to participate in the world's first Olympic football competition, Brown said he would decline, dropping in a little ode to quarterback Jalen Hurts:

"I heard the Olympics is during camp? So no,” Brown said. “Hopefully it goes through. But me personally, no. Because you guys (the media) and fans would be complaining about me not being in camp. So I'll keep the main thing the main thing."

The Los Angeles Olympics are scheduled to be held from July 14-28, so NFL players wouldn’t miss much more than the first week or so of training camp. Per ESPN, the league wants to establish specific parameters, including permission for any player under an NFL contract to participate in tryouts, and a limit of one player per NFL team on each national team participating. The league is also looking into purchasing insurance and implementing salary cap exemptions for players who suffer an injury during Olympic competition.

It’s worth noting that Philly’s wealth of skill position talent — Brown, Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith — will all be on the wrong side of 30 years old by the time the 2028 Olympics roll around.

There’s a lot that still needs to be hashed out here, but fresh off a Super Bowl championship, Brown’s priorities are clearly focused on bringing more Lombardi Trophies to Philadelphia.
