Driver in Anthony Joshua car crash charged after deaths of star boxer’s two close friends

Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver of a Lexus SUV carrying boxer Anthony Joshua that collided with a parked truck in Nigeria and killed two of Joshua’s teammates, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, according to BBC.

During a hearing at Sagamu Magistrates’ Court on Friday, Kayode, 46, was also charged with reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and driving without a valid driver’s license, a police source told the outlet.

Kayode reportedly was in custody and granted bail in the sum of 5,000,000 Naira (Nigeria currency), which is roughly $3,474 U.S. dollars.

A court hearing is scheduled for January 20.

Latif Ayodele, a trainer, and Sina Ghami, a strength and condition coach, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The 36-year-old Joshua was seen visibly in pain while being helped out of the vehicle at the scene of the crash, as seen in videos online.

He was taken to hospital with injuries after the crash and was discharged Wednesday.

Joshua was in Nigeria as he has family there.

He was on his way to visit relatives for New Year celebrations at the time of the crash, a family member told BBC.

The crash occurred after Joshua’s victory over Jake Paul in their bout at the Kaseya Center in Miami on Dec. 19.

After a sixth-round stoppage, Paul shared that he underwent surgery for a broken jaw he sustained at the hands of Joshua.
