Luka Doncic was largely responsible in the LA Lakers’ 121-111 win at the Spectrum Center against the Charlotte Hornets, stuffing the stat sheet. Apart from leading the team to their eighth victory of the season, Doncic was also at the center of social media attention for throwing down a rare dunk.

In recent years, seeing Doncic dunk in a game has become uncommon. During the postgame press conference, he explained that it is not because he is incapable of dunking. He just prefers not to.

“I can dunk, I just don’t want to do it all the time,” Doncic said.

“Just choose not to sometimes?” a reporter asked.

“Yeah,” Doncic replied.

The dunk in question occurred in the third quarter of Monday’s clash. After coming off a screen, Luka Doncic saw a clear path to the basket. Within seconds, he went from the three-point line straight to the rim, finishing with a strong two-handed dunk.

It was only one of several highlight plays for him in the game. Doncic wrapped up the night with 38 points, six rebounds and seven assists.

Luka Doncic teases Austin Reaves after comparing heaves

The final period of the Lakers-Hornets game witnessed not one but two unbelievable heaves that did not count.

First, Luka Doncic launched a deep shot from well beyond half-court, almost near the backcourt free-throw line. It went in cleanly, but the officials had just called a timeout, so the basket was waved off.

Near the end of the game, after the Hornets intentionally fouled Marcus Smart, Austin Reaves threw up his own heave from around half-court. Just like Luka’s, it went in, but it did not count either.

Right after that sequence, Doncic and Reaves were seen joking around. Reaves put his arm around Luka, and the latter pointed to the exact spot where he had taken his shot, teasing Reaves that his made heave came from even farther beyond. It was a small exchange, but it showed how close the two have grown to each other.

Their improved chemistry has been a major boost for the Lakers. The two have averaged a combined 67.4 points, 14.5 rebounds and 18.1 assists per game, forming one of the most lethal backcourts in the league. That impact has helped push the team to an impressive 8-3 start to the season.
