According to a Major League source close to The Athletic, Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas will not play for Venezuela in the upcoming World Baseball Classic due to insurance issues.
"The biggest concern, the league source said, was age," The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya wrote Thursday.
Rojas will turn 37 in February as he prepares for his 13th MLB season and fourth with the Dodgers. He announced that the upcoming season will be his last.
Rojas withdrew in 2023
It would've been quite an experience for Rojas to represent Venezuela before retirement. He didn't get an opportunity to play in the 2023 WBC, either.
"Rojas was initially on Venezuela’s 2023 roster," Ardaya added. "However, he withdrew after Gavin Lux tore his ACL, instead remaining in camp with the big league club."
The former longtime Miami Marlin shortstop became a hero in Los Angeles with his game-tying solo home run in the ninth inning of Game 7 of the World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
