Dodgers' Teoscar Hernandez exits victory over Rockies with concerning injury

1 hour ago 3

Even though the Los Angeles Dodgers could walk away happy with their fifth straight victory and a sweep on Wednesday versus the Colorado Rockies (4-1), things weren't all sunshine and rainbows. Sadly, for the Dodgers, outfielder Teoscar Hernandez had to exit the game in the second inning when he pulled up, grabbing his left hamstring trying to leg out an infield single.

According to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, Hernandez will be placed on the injured list, but the severity of the injury is unknown; more will be known after he has a scan on Thursday.

“I don't know how severe it is,” Roberts said postgame to reporters. “He tested well, but we're going to get a scan tomorrow. Obviously, it's an IL, and you know there's just no timeline, but you know something like that. Obviously, it's going to be a few weeks at the minimum, but disappointing, you know, he's been playing so well, and he's a big part of what we're doing, so to lose him for any length of time is not great.”

Until he was pulled on Wednesday, Hernandez was one of the hottest hitters in the last 15 games, batting .375 (third in the National League in that stretch) with three home runs. In that same stretch, Hernandez has been one of the Dodgers' best run producers, driving in 14 RBI, which is third in the National League and right behind his teammate, center fielder Andy Pages, who is second in that stretch (15).

The Los Angeles Dodgers are now down two outfielders, with Teoscar Hernandez injured

Hernandez is the second Dodgers outfielder to land on the injured list, with infielder/outfielder Enrique Hernandez placed on the injured list earlier on Wednesday with a left oblique strain. E. Hernandez is expected to be back in the second half of this season after an MRI revealed a "significant tear."

With both out, the Dodgers' outfield is rather thin, with Alex Call likely to see more time in left field with T. Hernandez out. However, the Dodgers will likely make a couple of roster moves on Thursday to accommodate the injuries.

Outfielder Alek Thomas, who is on the 40-man roster, seems like he'll receive a call-up to the big leagues to replace T. Hernandez. Thomas was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a trade that sent outfielder Jose Requena back to Arizona after he was designated for assignment on May 8. The 26-year-old has not appeared in a minor league game in the Dodgers' farm system since his acquisition.
