There is no surprise that the Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to go all out at the trade deadline as they try to win a third consecutive World Series. One name that has been heavily linked to them is Tarik Skubal.
The Dodgers already have a great starting rotation. Despite that, they are still pursuing Skubal.
“Now that it’s becoming inevitable that the free-falling Detroit Tigers may have no choice but to trade two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal at the deadline, rival executives believe the bidding will come down to four finalists that not only can afford the remainder of his $32 million contract, but will also be willing to give up prized prospects: The Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote.
However, if they do miss out on him, the one thing that absolutely cannot happen is Skubal getting traded to a contending National League team.
“You can’t bank on getting lucky and having an entire starting rotation healthy in October again Not to mention, you have to try and prevent Skubal from landing in PHI, ATL, MIL, SD Would be brutal having to face him twice in one playoff series,” Dodgers beat writer Blake Harris posted.
A potential trade package that could help secure Skubal for Los Angeles would likely include starting pitcher Justin Wrobleski and a prospect haul.
“They certainly have enough to trade as well, as they could offer either Justin Wrobleski or Emmet Sheehan off their major-league roster and one of their top outfield prospects, such as Zyhir Hope, Josue De Paula or Eduardo Quintero," The Athletic’s Jim Bowden wrote.
This would be a worthwhile deal for the Dodgers, even if it means parting with a key prospect. The reality is that Los Angeles is firmly in win-now mode, and trading a young pitcher and prospects for one of the best arms in baseball is a risk worth taking.
The Dodgers are simply trying to maximize their championship window. Adding a pitcher like Skubal would certainly help. A fully healthy rotation featuring Skubal would be a nightmare matchup for opposing teams in October.
