Dodgers could replace Michael Conforto with Pirates star outfielder

The Los Angeles Dodgers are tied with the Detroit Tigers for the best record in baseball. However, they have a hole in the outfield that they could address at the trade deadline.

Michael Conforto has had a disappointing season with the Dodgers. Tommy Edman figures to start seeing more time in the outfield, making way for Hyeseong Kim to play more second base. Manager Dave Roberts has already noted that if Conforto does not turn things around, the team could start thinking about what they need to do at the trade deadline.

Between Kim and Edman, the Dodgers don't need to make a trade to replace Conforto. However, they have shown they are an aggressive team and will make splashy moves. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal revealed that the Pittsburgh Pirates may be open to trade Oneil Cruz, and that only Paul Skenes and Andrew McCutchen are off limits.

Cruz has three more years of control with tons of upside. The Pirates are not a winning team, and Cruz is struggling at the plate this year. However, playing on a winning team in a loaded lineup could do wonders for him. BALLCAP Sports' Jim Riley proposed this trade to bring Cruz to the Dodgers.

  • Dodgers receive: outfielder Oneil Cruz
  • Pirates receive: shortstop/third baseman Alex Freeland and shortstop/second baseman Noah Miller

Cruz slashed .259/.324/.449 last season with 21 home runs. This season, he has struggled, but he would still be an upgrade over Conforto. He has three more years of club control and would give them an outfield of Cruz, Andy Pages and Teoscar Hernández. Edman would stay at second base, but Kim would have to stay in his bench role. However, next season, if Max Muncy leaves, the Dodgers could try getting Kim or Edman to be the everyday third baseman.
