Alex Freeland made a name for himself playing college baseball for the University of Central Florida. He also played in the Cape Cod Baseball League, which is arguably the most competitive collegiate summer baseball league.
He did enough to become a top draft prospect in 2022 and caught the eye of the Los Angeles Dodgers. They went on to select him in the third round and would start making his way through the minors.
He began the 2025 season in Triple-A, but was called to make his MLB debut on July 30th. He would play in 29 games before being optioned back to Triple-A toward the end of the season.
Dodgers' Alex Freeland is looking to turn a temporary role into a permanent stay
Freeland found himself a part of the Opening Day roster this season. He had a good spring, but he is on the MLB roster because of the injuries to Tommy Edman and Enrique Hernandez.
He is now the club's swiss army knife, being able to play second base, shortstop, and third base. Freeland is handling himself well and could be with the big-league club all season long with his defensive versatility, per Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter.
"With Tommy Edman and Enrique Hernandez both sidelined, Freeland has an opportunity to see some starting action at second base to start the year. The 24-year-old hit .263/.384/.451 with 46 extra-base hits in 106 games at Triple-A last season. His defensive versatility could be his ticket to holding onto a roster spot once everyone is healthy."
You can never have too many utility players. Even when Edman and Hernandez are healthy enough to return, keeping Freeland on the big-league roster could give manager Dave Roberts even more options and lineup flexibility.
Freeland has also handled himself well at the plate, which only helps his cause of keeping a roster spot.
