DiJonai Carrington explains 'white privilege' social post: 'Try exercising your critical thinking skills'

DiJonai Carrington was in hot water over the weekend after being ejected from a game against the Indiana Fever for a hard foul on Sophie Cunningham. Afterwards, she called the situation "white privilege," which further fanned the flames.

Carrington hadn't expanded on her thoughts until Monday, when she responded to Emmanuel Acho on social media. Acho criticized Carrington for her actions, but the sixth-year player decided to explain her thoughts and provide further clarification.

After Emmanuel Acho criticized Carrington for her "White privilege" post, Carrington responded directly to Acho by explaining her thought process.

"I've never once claimed that the assessment of the foul was white privilege (that was your assumption)," she said. "Try exercising your critical thinking skills, I know you studied psych."

Carrington then defended herself further, claiming her education helped her understand exactly what she's talking about.

"Furthermore, I'm the LAST thing from ignorant or asinine when it comes to speaking on 'white privilege,' do ya research on that one," she added. "I actually went to school, one of the top universities, might I add, to educate myself on this exact subject. I would never use that term as a rhetorical weapon knowing the historical and social weight it holds without having the proper evidence to substantiate it."

Carrington, a California native, attended Stanford for four seasons before transferring to Baylor for her final year of eligibility.

DiJonai Carrington ejection from Fever vs. Sky

Carrington was ejected from Saturday's Fever vs. Sky game for committing a Flagrant 2 foul on Fever forward Sophie Cunningham. The officials reviewed the play before upgrading it to a Flagrant 2, which is an automatic suspension.

Carrington fouled Cunningham in the face as Cunningham was going for a fast-break layup, and Cunningham was not happy with the foul as she immediately went after Carrington.

What has Sophie Cunningham said in wake of controversy?

After the game, Cunningham said she believed Carrington intentionally fouled her, even though the two do not have a prior relationship and Carrington wasn't on the Sky last year when the two teams had a more fierce rivalry.

Additionally, Cunningham said she thinks some teams play the Fever with extra motivation.

"I don't even know her," she said. "She wasn't even on the team last year when all that was going on. But I do think when people play the Fever, we're nationally televised, there's a lot of eyes on us and people just want attention. And that's her just trying to get attention."

As for Carrington's "White privilege" claim, Cunningham said there's "no reason even to play that card."

"This has nothing to do with race," she said. "Last year, I did the same thing and I got kicked out. And I deserved to be kicked out."
