UNC Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick has addressed reports about his potential move back to the NFL. Recent reports have linked the multiple Super Bowl-winning coach with the New York Giants.
However, Belichick assured fans in a statement on Friday evening that he will remain at Chapel Hill. He wrote:
“Despite circulating rumors, I have not and will not pursue any NFL coaching vacancies. Since arriving in Chapel Hill, my commitment to the UNC Football program has not wavered. We have tremendous support from the university, our alumni, and the entire Carolina community. My focus remains solely on continuing to improve this team, develop our players, and build a program that makes Tar Heel fans proud.”•

Bill Belichick’s statement has been described as “an effort to save face.” The former Giants’ defensive coordinator is said to have burned all bridges with the Giants a long time ago, per Giants insider Gary Myers.
I admit I thought Belichick to the Giants made some sense. But that was before I was told today it would NEVER happen because Belichick had burned all bridges in the organization about 4-5 years ago and he was absolutely not going to be a candidate. I look at this as a smart
The timeline for the falling out with the organization given by Myers coincides with the time of Belichick’s accidental congratulatory text to Brian Flores. Belichick had texted Flores, congratulating him on landing the Giants job, when the franchise had, in fact, hired Brian Daboll.
The mistake led to a lawsuit by Daboll against the Giants, a dispute that is still ongoing. Belichick accepted the UNC job offer after a lengthy NFL coaching career that saw him win eight Super Bowl rings, six as a head coach.
His first season at Chapel Hill hasn’t delivered so much on the hype that surrounded his arrival. However, a 4-5 start after the coach’s overhaul can be acceptable with the hope of improvements in subsequent seasons.
