Darryn Peterson's season at Kansas has been a weird one.
He misses games out of the blue. He asks to be pulled out of others, or sits long stretches in close contests. The Jayhawks' freshman phenom has been anything but reliable.
The problem, of course, is that he's so dang good that head coach Bill Self has tried to figure out a way to make it all work anyway.
At least one well-respected college basketball analyst is absolutely fed up with it.
ESPN's Dick Vitale took to X on Saturday night to share this take:
Sometimes a divorce is good for everyone involved & I firmly believe that needs to happen NOW @KUHoops - the Darryn Peterson soap opera needs to end .It has to be a nightmare for ALL involved- so sad as Darryn’s talent is off the charts .
— Dick Vitale (@DickieV) February 22, 2026That's about as strong as anyone has been on this.
It's not clear exactly what Vitale wants. Is he suggesting Kansas kick Peterson off the team entirely? That likely wouldn't help them be a better team in March, but it could get rid of a headache.
Self, who has coached many high-end players, likely believes he can work out the best way to handle Peterson.
With Peterson at his best, Kansas can compete with anyone. They've just rarely had him at his best for the long stretches they need him.
It'll be interesting to see if Vitale's comments start some more anti-Peterson momentum in Kansas.
The Jayhawks pretty much know Peterson is leaving for the NBA after this season. Maybe they'll just ride out the struggle in the meantime.
