Diamondbacks 'would love' to trade for 2.70 ERA pitcher or 23-HR infielder

The Arizona Diamondbacks are in the postseason hunt and are expected to be buyers at this year's trade deadline. Their bullpen need is a big one, but they would also stand to benefit from upgrading in the rotation and at first base.

There are plenty of options for the club to consider, though the rotation market is significantly more robust than the first base market. But what kind of players would the D-Backs want to acquire?

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Diamondbacks would reportedly "love" to acquire either Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize or Washington Nationals first baseman Luis Garcia Jr.

"The Arizona Diamondbacks, who suddenly have surged into the No. 2 wild-card spot after winning 13 of 18 games since July 9, would love to have Washington Nationals first baseman Luis Garcia or Detroit Tigers starter Casey Mize by the end of Monday, Nightengale reports.

Arizona really could use help at first base, with its struggles from the position making for one of the more pressing needs of any team around baseball.

Garcia, the 26-year-old infielder from the Nationals, is under club control through 2027 and would be a great target for the Diamondbacks. He has a .283 batting average this season with 23 home runs, 2.3 bWAR, and an .873 OPS.

Adding Garcia would be incredible, though it probably would cost quite a fortune to pry him from the Nationals this summer. But, it might be worth it for Arizona.

Mize, meanwhile, is a rental starting pitcher who has a 2.70 ERA this season with 2.9 bWAR despite a 4-6 record. Mize would be an incredible get to bolster the D-Backs rotation.

While Arizona's starting rotation might not be the top need, with multiple players on the injured list, adding a high-end starter would be a nice pickup.

Landing both of those players would cost a lot, but adding one of Garcia or Mize is possible. Either would be a huge addition, and Nightengale is reporting they would "love" to add Garcia or Mize by the August 3 MLB trade deadline.
