The San Francisco 49ers are a legacy team and the kind of team that always expects to go all the way. But, even for teams that are historically successful, there are often years where they're just better suited to win than others.
This coming season is one of those years for the 49ers. They're positioned well in 2026 to thrive, but after that, their chances drop off quite a bit. The reason has a lot to do with the age of this team's players.
Quarterback Brock Purdy is 26 years old, but this team's projected starting offense averages 30.3 years old, the oldest in the NFL.
49ers' Super Bowl window may be closing
On Sunday, Aaron Schatz at ESPN unleashed a feature naming a handful of NFL teams who will have their best shot to win a Super Bowl this year and then a more difficult shot in 2027.
The 49ers are on here. He discusses how the team's offense is aging, but the good news is that's not the case on defense. The team's projected starting defense, per Schatz, is 26.2, with linebacker Fred Warner at 30 as the oldest.
"San Francisco is also currently 29th in projected cap space for 2027, according to Over the Cap, although a lot of that can be solved by cutting Brandon Aiyuk and then extending Warner and Nick Bosa," he adds.
So, Purdy and the 49ers better be in it to win it this season. Even though it's certainly encouraging that this team has a young defense, the aging offense is what's going to hurt when it comes to getting points on the board in coming seasons.
