Diablo 4’s Endgame crafting can feel pretty complicated, but it’s actually never been easier to understand. The changes to Tempering and Masterworking feel limiting at first, but the lack of RNG around what Temper you actually put on your gear is honestly a godsend. Sure, you can’t put multiple Tempers on your gear, but you will have a much easier time getting the stat you want on each piece.
Today we’re going to cover what you need to know about Diablo 4’s Endgame crafting: From figuring out what Uniques you need (if any) and farming them, and what to do with powerful gear, once you actually have it. It can be frustrating to find the perfect gear, but I recommend you don’t get too hung up on that.
Upgrade gear as you go, and if you find something better, focus on that instead. If you’re interested in learning more about the Endgame crafting grind in Diablo 4, here’s what you need to know.
What to do to get into Endgame crafting in Diablo 4
The most frustrating thing about Endgame crafting in Diablo 4 is finding the perfect Legendary gear. You want specific, ideal stats, but in most cases, you just aren’t going to see that. You can’t really control when you find items with GAs (Greater Affixes, denoted by * next to the name/stats), either.
When it comes to farming gear for the Diablo 4 endgame, Treasure Breach Sigils are one of the best places to go (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)You just have to push into harder difficulties, and do content that drops lots of gear. That includes World Bosses, Nightmare Dungeons with Treasure Breach/Hidden Armory affixes, Infernal Hordes, and whatever seasonal content is available. The other annoying thing is having all the right materials.
In the current Season (Season 11), that’s incredibly easy. The Divine Gifts can help you farm all the Nightmare Sigils, and crafting materials you need. Combine that with the excessive gear, you can break down tons of gear for more and more crafting materials. Don’t be stingy with your materials, either. When you see something that looks good for your build, work on it! Materials are infinite, with enough time and patience.
1) Figuring out what you need for your build
Certain builds require specific Uniques to even function in Diablo 4 (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)The first real step in Endgame crafting in Diablo 4 is figuring out what Uniques/gear your build actually needs. Not all builds require Uniques, but every build is improved by at least one of them. For example, Zeal Paladins have a few variant options. One is built around the Red Sermon Unique. In addition to Red Sermon, it also wants the Argent Veil ring to enhance your damage and movement.
Know what you’re hunting for first and foremost, and where to get it. In this case, Lord Zir drops Red Sermon, and Argent Veil drops from Duriel. Each boss has a loot table you can consult, so it’s easy to figure out what you need to target farm, and which bosses you need to fight, to get enough Lair Keys.
It’s harder to target specific gear slots for Legendaries, but you can via gambling, if you have the Murmuring Obols. Just farm in-game content and when you see gear with Greater Affixes/interesting stats, consider what you have, and make judgement calls.
Once you’re level 60, it’s easy to get tons of Legendary gear. Helltides, Infernal Hordes, all content pretty much drops tons of gear. You just have to sift through it and see what’s right for you. Everything else? Break it down, unless you want to keep it for an alt/another time.
2) What can you do to upgrade your gear?
Now that you have some gear, you have quite a few things you do to it in the Diablo 4 Endgame crafting system. To do this, you’ll also need a variety of materials, and we’ll cover the harder to get ones as we go. We can’t tell you the exact things to stick on the gear either, because that is build dependent. Most of our build guides do cover these things, so the information is there.
Steps to perfect your gear
- Proper Legendary Aspect
- Add Gem Sockets if possible (for Gems/Rune Words)
- Temper the proper stats
- Masterwork to Quality 25 (and then Masterwork again)
The Codex of Power has all the Legendary Aspects you've attained on the server you're on in Diablo 4, and what level they are (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)Legendary Aspects are enchantments you can apply to any non-Unique/non-Mythic Unique piece of gear. You can have one per item, with some seasonal exceptions. Sanctification in Season 11, for example, can randomly add another Legendary Aspect.
These Aspects of course, only come on Legendary gear in Diablo 4. It will be written in orange text. If you highlight a piece of gear you’re equipped with and the text is browned out, it’s because you already have that Aspect elsewhere.
Breaking down pieces of Legendary equipment enhances the power of the Aspect it has, up to a certain cap. If you go into Collections, Codex of Power, you can see unowned Aspects, and where it can be found (from random gear or from specific dungeons). You apply new Legendary Aspects at any town’s Occultist in Diablo 4. It will cost Veiled Crystals (or Forgotten Souls if Ancestral) and some gold to apply these.
Veiled Crystals you’ll have by the pile, from Salvaging Rare or better gear, Legion Events, Infernal Hordes, and Cache Rewards from the Tree of Whispers. Forgotten Souls come from Salvaging Greater Affixed Ancestral Legendaries, and from the same places you’d find Veiled Crystals. The only difference is you can also find Forgotten Souls in the Undercity runs.
If it's an important piece of gear, add sockets! (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)You also want to add Gem Sockets for Gems and Rune Words, but not every gear slot can be socketed. Here’s what you need to know:
- Helms: 2 sockets
- Chest: 2 sockets
- Pants: 2 sockets
- 1-Handed Weapons: 1 socket
- 2-Handed Weapons: 2 sockets
- Bow: 2 sockets
- Focus: 1 socket
- Shield: 1 socket
- Amulet: 1 socket
- Rings: 1 socket
This will require a few materials typically, which I’ll also list below, as well as where they can be found. You shouldn’t have any issues with any of these, except for perhaps Scattered Prisms. Depending on your season, you may have other methods of farming crafting materials as well.
- Iron Chunks: Salvaging Weapons/Jewelry, Cache Rewards, Legion Events, Infernal Hordes, Elite Monsters, Ore in the wild.
- Veiled Crystals: Salvaging Rare/Legendary/Unique gear, Cache Rewards, Legion Events, Infernal Hordes, Elite Monsters.
- Baleful Fragments: Salvaging Legendary/Unique/Mythic gear, Cache Rewards.
- Scattered Prisms: World Bosses, Infernal Hordes, Undercity, Dark Citadel, Bartering at Mercenary Den.
Then it’s just a simple matter of applying the correct gems, or Rune Combos that compliment your build in the Diablo 4 Endgame. That’s of course, going to vary from class and build, so research what you’re after.
The axe icon denotes a Tempered stat (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)Another important facet of getting the most out of gear in Diablo 4’s Endgame crafting system is Tempering stats onto non-Unique/non-Mythic gear. You should be doing this every time you get a piece of gear you plan to equip for a lengthy period of time. Gear that’s just a placeholder, you can probably ignore that unless you have tons of resources.
You do this at the Blacksmith, and it requires you to have Tempering Manuals. Doing it is simple: Click the Tempering tab, add the piece of gear you want to update, and pick a category, followed by a specific stat, and roll the dice. You’ll start with access to one Manual when you hit level 15, by completing a short quest. They come in three rarities: Magic, Rare, and Legendary.
As you learn them and increase their rarity, the stats will improve. Each Temper Manual focuses on specific stats, as well. If you want to farm them, we recommend Helltides (Blood Maiden kills), Nightmare Dungeons, and Whisper Caches from Grim Favors. These often drop Tempering Manuals, in our experience.
You can Temper Rare and Legendary gear only. Rare gear gets one reroll for a desired stat percentage, and Legendary gear gets 2 Tempering Rerolls, plus 1 reroll per Greater Affix (capping at 7).
You can only have one Temper per piece of gear, but you get to pick the specific stat/skill/et cetera. You roll for the amount of that stat/skill you receive, and can reroll it if you have the proper currencies. If you run out of reroll attempts, you can do it again if you have Scrolls of Restoration, which drop from Infernal Hordes and Dark Citadel the most frequently. They also occasionally drop in The Pit, Nightmare Dungeons, and Undercity.
Depending on the rarity and gear type, it’s going to cost specific amounts of crafting materials to Temper your gear. Here’s exactly what you need to know:
| Gear Type | Rare (750) | Legendary (750) | Ancestral Legendary (800) |
| Armor | 25 Rawhide 5 Veiled Crystal | 15 Veiled Crystal 5 Coiling Ward | 25 Forgotten Souls 25 Coiling Ward |
| Weapons | 25 Iron Chunks 5 Veiled Crystal | 15 Veiled Crystal 5 Baleful Fragment | 25 Forgotten Souls 25 Baleful Fragments |
| Jewelry | 25 Iron Chunks 5 Veiled Crystal | 15 Veiled Crystal 5 Abstruse Sigils | 25 Forgotten Souls 25 Abstruse Sigils |
There are a few new materials here, so we’ll cover those below. Many of the materials used in this portion of the Diablo 4 Endgame crafting process we’ve already begun farming, and have access to.
- Rawhide: Salvaging Armor, Cache Rewards, Legion Events, Infernal Hordes, Elite Monsters
- Coiling Ward: Salvaging Legendary/Unique/Mythic gear, Cache Rewards
- Abtruse Sigil: Salvaging Legendary/Unique/Mythic gear, Cache Rewards
A pattern you’ve probably noticed by now is that almost all the reagents you need come from salvaging gear, so don’t be shy about breaking down Legendary and Unique gear that you have no use for. Grinding through Lair Bosses gives tons of Unique items, and it’s a sure thing you won’t need all of them, so break down the unwanted ones, and get tons of crafting items as a result.
Masterworking can be costly at first in Diablo 4, but when you get to the late game, these resources will fill your coffers (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)Finally, you want to put some effort into Masterworking your gear up to Quality 25 (and then a final time) to round out a piece of gear in Diablo 4’s Endgame crafting. Masterworking is also done at the Blacksmith, and while you don’t need to Temper your gear before you Masterwork, I recommend doing that part first anyway.
Each time you Masterwork a piece of gear, it increases the Quality (to a cap of 25) in Diablo 4, and also adds 1% to all affix values, and to the item’s base stats. Once you get an item to 25 Quality, you can Masterwork it one final time to add a Capstone Bonus. This will add +50% to one of the affixes on the item randomly. If you don’t like the result, you can reroll, provided you have the materials to do so.
The primary resource in Masterworking is still Obducite, which comes from Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes, and the Undercity. You can also farm tons of it from certain Treasure Goblins, and Horadric Strongrooms. Certain seasonal content can also increase the amount of Obducite you attain. However, you can only farm Obducite on Torment difficulties, so keep that in mind.
You’re going to also need, depending on the gear, Veiled Crystals, Rawhide/Iron Chunks, Coiling Wards, Abstruse Sigils, Baleful Fragments, and Forgotten Souls. When Masterworking in Diablo 4, each rank costs a specific amount of Obducite, capping at 150 for max rank.
If you aren't happy, you can always reroll! (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)Rerolling requires 200 Obducite and 1 Neathiron, which drops from World Bosses, Bartuc (Infernal Hordes), Astaroth (Escalation Dungeons), and Belial. It occasionally drops from Elites and Bosses (in Nightmare Dungeons). It also drops from certain Treasure Goblins. The best ways to farm Obducite are:
- Horadric Strongrooms (Nightmare Dungeons)
- Nightmare Dungeons with Treasure Breach/Goblin Sigils
- Infernal Hordes (resource chest)
Personally, Horadric Strongroom dungeons have always had the highest yield for me, and that’s what I tend to focus on. The later you are in the game, and the more gear you’ve salvaged, the more resources you have for everything else. Those should almost never be an issue. The tedious part is farming all the Obducite. What you decide to keep as your Capstone Bonus largely depends on your build, and what you value at the time.
3) Mythic Uniques (Crafting and potentially farming)
The most annoying part of gearing up in Diablo 4 is finding Mythic Uniques (Image via Blizzard Entertainment)The most annoying, and frustrating part is when a build requires a Mythic Unique. You can make specific Mythic Uniques at the Jeweler but they require 2x Resplendent Sparks as well as 6x of three different, specific Runes. You can find the specifics at the Jeweler, so we won’t list all of the various combinations you’ll need here. You can also make random Mythics at the Blacksmith for 2x Resplendent Sparks and 50m gold.
The downside is that of course, it’s random. You have a chance to farm Mythic Uniques from basically any content in the game, and you can’t target farm them. That’s because it’s the best gear in the game, hands-down. You can even get this gear from gambling with your Murmuring Obols, but it’s pretty rare. There are a few ways to get Resplendent Sparks, though:
- 1x from defeating Echo of Lilith (Once)
- 1x from completing Season Journey
- 1x from Limited-Time Events (Goblin Greedlings Rep, for example)
- Rarely drops from Duriel/Andariel/Belial
- 1x from salvaging Mythic Uniques
It’s a very frustrating material to farm, and more or less, the best way to get extra ones is to break down unneeded Mythic Uniques, in my experience. Getting some of the Runes can be hard too, but when in doubt, check the Trade channel to see if someone has some Runes you’re in need of.
Final Thoughts on Diablo 4’s Endgame crafting system
Unfortunately, a lot of it is still very much up to chance: Getting the perfect gear, getting the perfect stats, getting the perfect Greater Affixes, it all takes a lot of time and patience. However, simply salvaging unneeded gear gives you a lot of the resources you need for all the endgame crafting you could want to do in Diablo 4.
Anytime you get a piece of gear that's an upgrade, you at least want to go through a few of the above steps, provided you have the materials. Swapping out relevant Aspects should always be done, as should Tempering. Until I have unlimited resources, I only Masterwork gear I plan on keeping for a while.
