Devils drop unfortunate Jack Hughes injury update

The Milano Cortina Winter Olympics are just a few days away which means hockey fans are starting to turn their attention on that. Team USA are looking for a chance to finally notch the gold medal but bad news is starting to loom around the corner. The Sheldon Keefe-led New Jersey Devils might have gotten their 3-2 overtime win against the Nashville Predators but Jack Hughes went down pretty badly.

Will the New Jersey center heal in time for the Olympics?

Hughes got hit with a lower body injury against the Predators. Since he went down with the injury at the 8:27 mark of the first period, the Devils center has caused Team USA and New Jersey fans to sweat bullets. Coach Keefe cleared the air about Hughes' injury return and it's not looking good so far, via Mike G. Morreale of NHL.com.

"In the next little bit, he’s going to get some imaging and get a better idea of what’s happening. Until we have those results we won’t know his status in terms of travel and the situation going forward. As I said, the sense is it's not anything serious,” Keefe said. “We just have to make sure and that’s what he’s doing right now," the Devils coach added.

This concern is further amplified by the fact that Hughes has already sustained a hand injury earlier in the 2025-26 season. Due to that, he has only played 12 games for the Devils. Notably, he is just coming off a year where he ranked eighth in NHL All-Star voting and it means that he will be a big loss to the Team USA roster in case his injury disallows him from playing.

While there is optimism amid the uncertainty, Hughes only has three more games with the Devils in the NHL schedule before the Olympics break starts. Will he make it back to the ice before then or are Team USA fans going to have to wait four years to see him represent the country on the ice?
