Detroit Lions respond to Jameson Williams trade rumors without saying a word

3 hours ago 1

Things have gotten interesting as it pertains to the Detroit Lions and wide receiver Jameson Williams, as a trade rumor recently popped up involving the Alabama product.

According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, the thought from some around the league is that Williams could be on the trade block, and that rumor only had more fuel added to it after some cryptic social media posts from Williams.

"Receiver’s another spot to consider — with a fifth-year option decision coming on Jameson Williams, and some in NFL circles believing he could be traded," Breer wrote.

Just days after that rumor hit the internet, the Lions posted some photos to social media of their players taking part in voluntary offseason workouts, and the first picture the team shared was of a smiling Williams.

Putting in work

A coincidence? Maybe, but we tend to believe the Lions put it out there as a sign that everything is just fine and there is nothing to worry about when it comes to Williams' future with the team.

Will the Lions trade Jameson Williams?

While we can never say never in the NFL, it's hard to imagine the Lions trading away someone who was a key member of their offense last season.

Williams broke out with a career-best campaign that saw him tally 58 catches for 1,001 yards and eight total touchdowns (seven receiving). His yardage output was second among Lions pass-catchers, trailing only Amon-Ra St. Brown.

If the Lions were to trade Williams, the team would be very short at wide receiver and there's no guarantee they'd be able to find someone to replace him in the short term, which would be a major issue for a win-now team like Detroit that has its sights set on winning a Super Bowl in 2025.

Now, that's not to say the Lions won't draft a wide receiver this year as a possible future replacement, but we fully anticipate Williams being on the roster in 2025.

The Lions do have a decision to make on Williams this offseason, as his fifth-year option has to be exercised by May 1. After his impressive showing in 2024, we'd expect that option to get picked up.
