Detroit Lions 'got a really good one' in recent free-agent signing

The Detroit Lions added to their running backs room this week with the signing of former UFL rusher Jacob Saylors.

Saylors, who had stints in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants and Cleveland Browns but has never gotten into a game, nearly led the UFL in rushing last season with the St. Louis Battlehawks after posting 499 yards.

According to Pride of Detroit's Jeremy Reisman, the Lions "got a really good one" in the 24-year-old running back, per his former Battlehawks running backs coach, Kyle Caskey, who was also a running backs coach for the Lions.

“Not sure why anyone hasn’t picked him up yet," Caskey told Reisman.

“Should have led the UFL in rushing, but we had clinched everything with two games to go,” he added on Saylors. “And he didn’t see the field in the last six quarters of the regular season because we didn’t play him.”

Caskey went on to praise the 5-foot-10, 199-pound running back for his explosiveness, vision, blocking and football IQ, but was honest in admitting that the running back "will need to get some work vs. the NFL-level rushers."

"Really good inside zone/duo runner because he can see the hole and make those quick cuts and accelerate out of them," Caskey added.

The 24-year-old joins a crowded Lions running backs room that has seven players in total, so the deck is obviously stacked against him actually making the roster.

David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs are locks, and Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki are the favorites for what will be the one or two spots behind them.

Saylors' best bet at sticking in Detroit will be on the practice squad.
