‘Fourth Wing’ Author Rebecca Yarros Teases “Amazing” TV Adaptation Amid ‘Onyx Storm’ Release

Rebecca Yarros is encouraging readers’ theories to take flight.

The author of the Empyrean series—whose book Fourth Wing became a BookTok phenomenon—shared an excerpt from a scene she said she wrote “just for funsies,” leaving fans clamoring for more. But before we get into the scene’s implications, here’s exactly what she shared:

“I’m with you to the end, Brother. But someone has to say it,” Garrick’s face tightens. “This plan risks everything our parents worked for,” he warns, already reaching for his flight jacket. “Everything they died for.”

“They died for us, for a world where we have the knowledge to make our own choices.” The shadows at my feet sharpen as I sheathe the second sword across my back. “Violet’s my choice. I’m more than willing to die for her.”

“Let’s go hunt some wyvern.”

And that’s all Rebecca revealed in from the excerpt, which could be seen on her laptop with a tropical beach on the background. “Sometimes switching up the office view for a couple of weeks makes you want to dip a toe back in Empyrean,” she wrote in the accompanying caption of the July 28 post, “and start writing a little bonus scene.”

Now let’s dive into it. The exchange appears to be between rider Garrick Tavis and Tyrrendor’s heir Xaden Riorson.

While it isn’t clear when exactly the scene takes place—with some readers speculating in the comments it’s from the series’ second book Iron Flame—the excerpt did leave fans wondering whether Rebecca was teasing a hint to one of the most burning questions from the latest installment, Onyx Storm: Who is Xaden’s new venin brother, who had been newly turned at the book’s close?

While fans wondered whether it could be Xaden’s last living relative Bodhi Durran, or even Violet Sorrengail’s brother Brennan, many were convinced the answer to the mystery lay with Garrick—a character whose power been pushed to the brink by the end of Onyx Storm, making him a likely candidate to have reached into the earth for that extra strength.

This new excerpt lends even more credence to the Garrick theory, with the inclusion of “Brother” in the exchange of dialogue—noticeably capitalized. It was a detail that wasn’t lost on fans.

“BROTHER, you say?!?! We are screaming thank you for this treat Rebecca,” one user wrote, while another added, “BROTHER ?! You knew what you were doing with that!!!!”

One even went so far as to feel the theories had been confirmed, writing, “GARRICK IS THE NEW BROTHER!!!!”

But with Rebecca currently a contemporary romance novel before she heads back into Navarre, fans will have to wait for the official answer. In the meantime, keep reading for more books to lose yourself in this summer.
