Detroit Lions' Carlton Davis plans on playing through concerning injury

The Detroit Lions have been hit hard by injuries over the first 10 weeks of the 2024 campaign, and now they have another one to be worried about after veteran cornerback Carlton Davis came down with an injury at practice this past week.

Davis is coming off his best game with the Lions last week, when he tallied two huge interceptions to help stifle the Houston Texans and allow Detroit to climb back into the game.

But, as Davis revealed during the week, he broke his thumb at practice in the days after his impressive showing against Houston.

Davis has a cast on the thumb and plans on playing through it — talk about grit — but there are obvious concerns about the injury impacting his performance. Davis admitted his ability to catch the ball will be affected, and the injury will tame his aggressiveness a bit, also.

"I can still catch, somewhat," Davis said to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. "Just small adjustments in the game as far as using my hands and I guess maybe being a little bit more finesse, not too aggressive.

"I honestly feel like when I get in the game the adrenaline takes over and I just don’t give a [expletive] no more, that’s what I’m hoping or I think that’ll happen."

Davis was added to the Lions' injury report on Thursday, so that's likely when he broke it. The 27-year-old was able to log a full practice on Friday, though, and doesn't have a status for Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the offseason, Davis has been solid for the Lions' secondary. On 64 passes thrown his way, Davis has given up a completion rate of 57.8% and a passer rating of 71.5. We mentioned Davis' two picks before, and he has 10 passes defensed.

Davis has led the charge in what is a much-improved Lions secondary. Let's just hope he can keep playing at a high level with his injury.
