Detective Comics #1112 Comic Review

In this review of Detective Comics #1112, more secrets are revealed as the connection between Klep Corp. and the clan of assassins is finally exposed. The heroes act to honor their fallen friend’s legacy the best way they can.

Detective Comics #1112 begins in the wake of revelations about the assassination program that brainwashed young Arabella and her grandmother Rita for years.  Although Ramon (aka Prion and Rita’s son) escaped the life and teamed up with Batman, Green Arrow and Black Canary, he never told them about his past. In the Arrow Cave, the three heroes help Rita and Arabella adjust to the brutal reality about their lives, and Ramon.

Batman walks Rita and Arabella through the lost parts of their history and reveals a deadly family secret. Batman offers a chance to shut down the operation and enlists Rita to help. The next night a van picks up Rita and she tells her handler that Batman is dead. Batman, Green Arrow and Black Canary track the van back to Klep Corp where the CEO is fretting over the last living witness (safe in the Arrow Cave).

The heroes take the direct approach, bursting in through the front door and working their way upstairs, taking down numerous guards. The heroic trio are wearing the special costumes to honor Ramon and Flight Squadron Delta. Inside Klep Corp, Rita’s handler works to erase evidence and quickly realizes that Rita is no longer under his control just before she decks him.

The Klep CEO finds his escape route blocked as Arabella has commandeered his helicopter. The girl threatens to use her ability against him, but the heroes are not surprised when she allows the CEO to be taken into custody.

Detective Comics #1112 ends as Klep Corp is raided after Batman drops a dime to an FBI contact. Batman joins Oliver Queen and Dinah Lance in Wildcat’s gym as Batman explains that Dinah wasn’t the one who killed Ramon during their sparring match. Later the heroes go to visit Ramon’s grave in tribute.

Analysis 

Detective Comics #1112 wraps up the “Flight” story arc with a moving finale that opens old wounds, gives Rita and Arabella a fresh start, honors a fallen hero and delivers a small measure of justice against a lawless organization. Writer Tom Taylor sticks the landing with an intricate finale that answers every question and offers a sense of hope and optimism amid Ramon’s tragic loss. Taylor provides a large amount of exposition, but the dialogue only adds to the intrigue rather than bogging down the story.

Taylor’s script pops with some knowing humor and while Batman gets his due, Black Canary gets to lead the charge in protecting Arabella and bringing down Klep Corp. It was a nice touch to have Arabella wear her father’s uniform even if she wasn’t supposed to be on the mission, and she gets to take back a bit of control against eh man wo reprogrammed her. Rita also gets a chance to make things right against her former handler, but the road back for both women will be long and arduous but sat least they have each other for support.

Mikel Janin delivers his typical exemplary art and color in Detective Comics #1112, between the smaller dramatic moments and the widescreen action, the story moves fast, covers a lot of ground and looks good while doing it. Janin’s knack for facial expressions, backgrounds (Arrow Cave), the cool blues of the night scenes (and the heroes’ uniforms), as well as the softly lit conversation in Wildcat’s Gym as the sun rises only adds to the depth of emotion and sense of relief as the case is finally solved and their friend is put to rest.

Final thoughts 

Detective Comics #1112 closes out “Flight” with a thrilling and emotional finale that might feel familiar but still engages and entertains. The script, art and color impress as always.
