Derek Carr return from retirement news for Saints is maybe not what NFL expected

Is Derek Carr coming back from retirement or not?

That's the question the New Orleans Saints, and the rest of the NFL, don't really know the answer to yet. And for their to be an answer, there would likely have to be a team that wants Carr in the first place.

Right now, that doesn't appear to be the case.

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio wrote this late on Saturday night:

"As of Scouting Combine week, the Saints hadn’t heard from any team regarding a potential trade for Carr’s contract rights. Through the first week of free agency, we’re told, the Saints still haven’t gotten any inquiries."

Carr retired about a year ago as he faced the prospect of a difficult injury return to get back on the field for the Saints in 2025.

New Orleans ended up discovering that rookie QB Tyler Shough had enough promise to view him as their quarterback going fowrard.

Carr has said he'll come back to play for a Super Bowl contender, but where is he going to find that at this point?

The Saints hold his rights, and they'd have to trade him if he wanted to play for a different team.

Operating under the assumption that the Raiders pick Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick, only two teams might still need a QB -- the Steelers and the Cardinals, writes Florio.

The Jets conceptually could consider an alternative to Geno Smith, but it doesn't seem like they would've traded for him just to be their backup.

Carr, at this point, maybe would need an injury or unexpected change to create the right opening for him. Or a lack of return to the Steelers by Aaron Rodgers.

For now, it seems he's in a holding pattern.
