Audiences are counting down the days to Rob Liefeld’s long-awaited return to Youngblood. If you need proof, look no further than today’s announcement that Youngblood #1 is already sold out at the distribution level, and will be heading back to press before fans even get their hands on copies next week.
In a statement, Image Comics urged fans to contact their local comic shop to reserve a copy — and promised they will rush the issue back to print this week in order to meet reorder demand and bridge the gap in supply for retailers.
For longtime Liefeld fans, it’s likely you’ll want a copy of the second printing cover regardless, as it’s an homage to one of the ’90s’ most iconic covers: Liefeld’s own New Mutants #98, the comic which featured the first appearances of Deadpool, Gideon, and Domino. The new cover swaps out Youngblood’s new characters — Vandel, Xerxes, and Plsymx — for the trio while Die-Hard, Shaft, Vogue, and Badrock step in for Cable, Cannonball, Boom-Boom, and Sunspot.
“This is the time for gratitude,” Liefeld said in a statement. “Grateful to the Youngblood fans that have roared with their enthusiasm. Grateful to every retail partner that took the leap with their support. Grateful to comic stores, the backbone of our market, we rely on them to reach the masses. And I gotta express my thanks to everyone at Image Comics who provided guidance and enthusiasm. Enjoy this comic! The road to Youngblood #100 starts here!”
This Youngblood launch features over a dozen variant covers for fans to get pumped up about, Manga-inspired black & white editions, 27 retailer exclusives, 30 epic team-up covers, and a wave of must-have incentive ratio variants. Remember when things were simpler, and they just bagged these and put a trading card inside? How quaint!
The original Youngblood #1 marked the opening salvo in the Image Revolution and remains one of the best-selling independent comics of all time, with sales of over one million copies. This relaunch marks the first time in nearly a decade that Liefeld has been reunited with one of the properties that defined his career.
“It’s so great that I can run into the comfort of characters that I created, that launched a movement,” Liefeld said when the series was announced. “They carry such history. I love Youngblood so much. These characters are my absolute passion.”
