The San Antonio Spurs were on their way back to their city with a 2-2 record in the NBA Finals. That unfortunately did not happen for them because they blew a massive 29-point lead, so they are now down 3-1 against the New York Knicks.
Almost every Spurs player made silly mistakes, but it was veteran guard De'Aaron Fox who made the biggest one. The Spurs had a one-point lead late in the game, and Fox had the ball in transition, but instead of wasting time, he got his layup attempt blocked at the rim by OG Anunoby.
De'Aaron Fox's reasoning behind his late layup attempt in Game 4
As the veteran leader for the Spurs, Fox is relied upon to make the best decisions. He is their floor general, so everyone expects him to be locked in all the time. Unfortunately, that was not the case in the fourth quarter of Game 4.
It was a silly mistake because he could have easily pulled out of the layup and held the ball. Since he is a reliable free-throw shooter, the Knicks would have been forced to foul him and give up two easy points.

The Spurs could have gone into the dying seconds of the game with a three-point lead, but Anunoby's block erased that. Despite it being a bad decision, it seems Fox himself had a rationale behind it.
"I tried to get a layup to get up three. Force them to need a three, and OG made a good block," Fox said in his post-game interview in the locker room after Game 4.
It will be a moment that will live in infamy for Spurs fans. Unfortunately, Fox will need to bounce back from this because it is being hailed as a bad play, including NBA icon Charles Barkley.
Going to San Antonio with a 3-1 deficit rather than a series tied at 2-2 is heartbreaking. However, the Spurs have to roll with the punches now, and look to get three wins in a row to win the series.
