David Wright’s Hall of Fame chances on rise after latest ballot

1 hour ago 2

David Wright’s stock is rising among Hall of Fame voters, with time to spare.

The former Mets captain jumped to 14.8 percent of the vote Tuesday, when official tallies were released for the Baseball Hall of Fame class for 2026.

Carlos Beltrán and Andruw Jones were elected after surpassing the 75 percent threshold needed for induction.

Wright received 8.1 percent of the vote last year (his second appearance on the ballot).

Candidates remain on the ballot for up to 10 years provided they receive at least five percent of the vote each year. Wright received 6.2 percent of the vote in his first year of eligibility.

Jones received only 7.3 percent of the vote his first year on the ballot and steadily climbed. This was his ninth year on the ballot.

Among third basemen, Scott Rolen received only 10.2 percent of the vote his first year on the ballot. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in his sixth year.

Wright’s career, once on a steady Hall of Fame course, was curtailed by injuries — most notably spinal stenosis that forced his retirement before he could complete his eight-year contract with the club.

Beltrán became the sixth Hall of Famer raised in Puerto Rico, joining Roberto Alomar, Orlando Cepeda, Roberto Clemente, Edgar Martinez and Ivan Rodriguez. Puerto Rico is tied with Cuba for the Latin American country with the most Hall of Famers.

Manny Ramirez received only 38.8 percent of the vote in his 10th, and final, attempt at the Hall of Fame on the BBWAA ballot.

Ramirez was twice suspended for performance-enhancing drug violations, damaging his candidacy.

Félix Hernández, in his second year on the ballot, received 46.1 percent of the vote.

Every candidate to receive at least 43 percent of the vote in his second year has subsequently been elected to the Hall of Fame.

Eligible first-time players for the 2027 ballot include Buster Posey, Jay Bruce, Jon Lester and Kyle Seager. The 2028 eligible first-time players include Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, David Price and Stephen Strasburg.
