UConn’s Dan Hurley was on hand at the NBA Draft this week to support Liam McNeely, who was taken 29th overall by the Charlotte Hornets. While there, he took the time to address the rumors suggesting he’s a candidate to be patrolling the sideline at Madison Square Garden as head coach of the New York Knicks.
“That’s not even something I thought about (or) considered,” Hurley told Joe Arruda of the Hartford Courant. “I’m a college coach.”
Hurley was also heavily linked to the Los Angeles Lakers job last season, which was eventually filled by JJ Redick. The two-time NCAA champion says that the way this past season went for UConn — out in the second-round of the NCAA Tournament — only motivates him more to stay at the school rather than jump ship to the NBA.
“As soon as this year was over, your total mindset was like, try to regroup mentally because this year was a lot,” Hurley said. “Then get locked in on putting together a championship roster and play this season the way that we should have played this past year.”
The Knicks also reached out to former NCAA champion Jay Wright, who coached Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges at Villanova. However, Wright won’t be coming out of retirement to take the job.
New York has hosted interviews with Taylor Jenkins, Mike Brown, and Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori, and are scheduled to host James Borrego in the coming days.
