It could've been a much bigger talking point, but in the Olympic quarterfinal, Czechia's goal with six skaters on the ice only became a footnote when Canada rallied to move on.
Still, it was shocking. They had six skaters in the defensive zone, then in the offensive zone, then in the celebratory hug pictured above. It wasn't a fluke. Somehow, they had just ended up with an extra dude out there.
Now, we know why.
Colorado Avalanche forward Martin Necas shared in an interview with a Czech publication just what happened.
This is how it translates, via X:
"The coaches switched us up in the third period, and I was playing with Hertl and Palič. But I was used to switching with Červus. Well, we must've had some miscommunication with Palič. So I jumped in for Červus. But Palič jumped in there too. Well, and that's how we scored that six-on-six goal. Well, and now we're celebrating, and I see that Palič is there and on the other side Pasta. And as I'm looking at Pasta, I say 'dude, there's somehow too many of us here, something's off'. But if you wanna beat Canada, you gotta try everything."

The last line is the best. Necas jokes around like it was intentional, but clearly it wasn't. With replays and challenges, it could've been easily overturned if someone noticed.
Somehow, though, no one did.
The whole nation of Canada would've erupted if this moment knocked the Canadians out of the Olympics.
In the end, Canada won in overtime, then won the semifinal in overtime, then lost the final and had to settle for the silver medal next to the United States' gold.
Probably won't see many more goals with six skaters on the ice for one team.
