Cubs-Marlins trade idea could land star pitcher in Chicago

The Cubs currently hold a 62-43 record, tied with the Milwaukee Brewers at the top of the National League Central.

A few weeks ago, the Cubs probably didn't think they would be fighting for the division after their excellent start to the season, but the Brewers have been one of the best teams in Major League Baseball since the beginning of July.

If the Cubs want to win the division, they will need to upgrade their pitching staff. Zachary Rotman from Fansided thinks the team should consider trading for Miami Marlins pitcher Edward Cabrera.

"Similarly to Merrill Kelly, Edward Cabrera has been outshone in trade talks by his Miami Marlins teammate, Sandy Alcantara. While Alcantara was once one of the best pitchers on the planet, he, like Gallen, has had a miserable 2024 campaign. With that in mind, the Cubs should turn their attention to Cabrera, a young right-hander who could be part of the equation long-term," Rotman wrote. "Cabrera has been inconsistent and pretty injury-prone throughout his MLB career, but he's been able to make 17 starts this season, and he's pitched as well as he ever has. The 27-year-old has a 3.48 ERA in 88 innings of work, and he has a 2.47 ERA since the start of May."

Cabrera is an interesting trade target since he's unlike many players available at the deadline. Usually, players who get traded at the deadline are on struggling teams, and their contracts are running out, but the 27-year-old pitcher still has three years of control after this season.

If the Cubs trade for Cabrera, they will need to be cautious of his injury history, as he has never pitched more than 22 games in a season throughout his career.
