Teams around Major League Baseball are always looking to improve, no matter the time of the year.
However, it's important to recognize that for some of these moves to happen, it'll probably be closer to the trade deadline than most fans want to imagine. This is just the harsh reality of the league at the moment, as teams often don't want to play their hands quicker than they need to.
Teams also get much more desperate at the trade deadline, and it sounds like the New York Mets could be one of them, with the Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations, Jed Hoyer, recently suggesting that conversations are happening, but that he's hearing that teams don't want to make these trades until after the All-Star break or right before the deadline.
“The conversations are certainly happening. You talk to teams about pitching. Usually, at this time of year, (talks) are still on the smaller side of those transactions,” Hoyer told The Mully & Haugh Show on 104.3 The Score on Tuesday morning, H/T MLB Trade Rumors.
“The major moves and significant transactions that people would talk about are much more likely to happen post All-Star Break or even closer to the deadline,” he noted.
There's no guarantee here that this is the Mets he's talking about, but I feel safe saying that New York is at least a team he's called.
Trading for Freddy Peralta makes a whole lot of sense because of his existing history with skipper Craig Counsell. Counsell, who would certainly welcome Peralta, is likely hoping that Chicago makes the necessary moves at the deadline to improve its roster.
