Crystal Palace have conceded defeat in their race to keep captain Marc Guehi beyond his contract expiry at the end of the 2025/26 season.
The England star had looked set for a deadline day move to Liverpool after the two sides agreed a £35m [$46m] exit fee in the final hours of the summer window.
However, Palace boss Oliver Glasner dramatically pulled the plug on the agreement, after his condition of signing a replacement was not met.
Palace chairman Steve Parish has since reiterated his openness to a reduced £25m [$33m] sale in January to avoid losing the 25-year-old for free next summer.
However, Liverpool will not make a mid-season offer, despite the prospect of competition from Real Madrid for the defender, ahead of next summer's 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With Guehi's exit position clear, Palace are now on the hunt for a replacement, and Manchester City's versatile star Nathan Ake is back on Glasner's radar.

Palace want Man City star as Guehi replacement
Ake was linked with a summer departure from the Etihad Stadium, but Pep Guardiola opted against a sale, after Manuel Akanji joined Inter Milan on a season-long loan.

As per the latest from Teamtalk.com, Glasner views the four-time Premier League as an ideal fit on the left-side of his backline after Guehi moves on.
Ake's own contract is up in 2027, and next summer could be City's final chance land around £27m [$35m] for the 30-year-old, as Guardiola looks to the future with Vitor Reis, Nico O'Reilly, Rico Lewis and Abdukodir Khusanov.
