Harmanpreet Kaur also joined an elite club of Indian captains. She became only the third skipper from the country to win an ODI World Cup. Kapil Dev led India to victory for the first time in 1983, while the Men in Blue won the World Cup for the second time in 2011 under Dhoni's leadership.
Harmanpreet Kaur guides India to maiden ICC title in Women's cricket
India's triumph over South Africa in the final of the Women's World Cup 2025 was a massive achievement. The importance of the victory was doubled by the fact that it was their first-ever ICC trophy in Women's cricket.
The Women in Blue had played two ODI World Cup finals before both lost on both occasions. This time around, they beat the Proteas Women by 52 runs in the final. Batting first, they posted a challenging total of 298/7. They then bowled South Africa out for 246 in 45.3 overs.
Harmanpreet Kaur marshalled the team extremely well. While her efforts as skipper were commendable, she also made vital contributions as a senior batter in the side. The right-hander scored 260 runs from eight innings at an average of 32.50 with two half-centuries.
Her best performance came in the all-important semi-final against Australia. India were set a mammoth target of 339 runs. While Jemimah Rodrigues scored an unbeaten century, Harmanpreet played a captain's knock from one end. She struck a vital 88-ball 89 with the help of 10 fours and two sixes as they got over the line with five wickets to spare.
