Cowboys veteran receiver urged to ‘follow Mike McCarthy’ to next team

The Dallas Cowboys do not know who their head coach will be yet, but they know it will not be Mike McCarthy. McCarthy is interviewing for other jobs and could take some players with him.

Brandin Cooks is a free agent and FanSided's Maitland Rutledge urged him to "follow Mike McCarthy" to his next team. The Cowboys will need to add a playmaker next to CeeDee Lamb regardless of where Cooks plays next season.

"While it remains to be seen if McCarthy will even go to the Bears or Saints, Cooks should be another player who follows him," wrote Rutledge. "When the Cowboys traded for him, it was to try to win big before the Super Bowl window closes. Now the team is arguably in a rebuilding mode at some positions. Cooks following McCarthy to his next coaching stop might be his last chance to get one more good-paying contract."

McCarthy is a candidate to take the New Orleans Saints job. If Cooks follows him, he will return to the team where he started his career. In three seasons with the Saints, Cooks had 20 touchdowns and 2,861 yards.

The Cowboys thought Cooks would slot in as a replacement for Amari Cooper. The Cowboys have desperately missed Cooper's presence since he was traded. The Cowboys could look to bring in a talented rookie next to Lamb or make a run at a free-agent wideout. Perhaps Tee Higgins could be a player the Cowboys target to help fix their offense.
