The Pittsburgh Steelers completely fell apart at the end of the 2024 campaign, as the team lost the final four games of the regular season and was embarrassed by the Baltimore Ravens in the wild card round. Though the Steelers are a consistent playoff contender, the franchise hasn't won a postseason game since the 2016-2017 season and has a ton of questions to answer this offseason.
One position that is surrounded by uncertainty is running back, primarily due to Najee Harris's murky future. The 2021 first-round pick has been an integral part of the Steelers offensive attack since joining the team in 2021, but Pittsburgh declined his fifth-year option last offseason, and Harris isn't an irreplaceable player.
If general manager Omar Khan decides to move on from Harris this offseason, Sports Illustrated's Tyler Reed urges the Dallas Cowboys to target the 2021 Pro Bowler in 2025 free agency if the team doesn't retain Rico Dowdle.
"Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris would be the home run choice for the Cowboys," Reed wrote. "Harris finished 2024 with 1,043 yards rushing and would be the perfect physical back the Cowboys need."
Harris has been consistent and productive for the Steelers in his career, as the 26-year-old has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his first four seasons and has never missed a single game. However, Harris has struggled with inefficiency, as the former Alabama standout has a 3.9 career yards per carry average and was a non-factor in the final few games of the season this year.
The Steelers could look to bring back Harris in the offseason, but the veteran could use a change of scenery, and Pittsburgh should focus on bringing in more dynamic playmakers and modernizing on offense. Both sides should try something different and move on from each other.
Though Harris is inconsistent and can be inefficient at times, the former first-round pick would bring some much-needed physicality to a Cowboys offense that has been one-dimensional over the last two seasons. Harris would definitely be an upgrade over Rico Dowdle and a savvy signing by Dallas.
