The Dallas Cowboys deserve credit for attempting to beef up their pass-rushing attack before the 2026-27 campaign runs away.
The Cowboys clearly want to refrain from putting unnecessary pressure to score on virtually every other possession for the franchise to prevail weekly (Dallas’ offense averaged 27.8 points per game last year, but their defense surrendered 30.1), and finding a game-changing quarterback hunter would go a long way toward doing so.
Considering the Cowboys struck out on recently traded Los Angeles Rams standout edge rusher Myles Garrett on Monday, it made sense for them to turn their attention to former Philadelphia Eagles star defender Josh Sweat.
Dallas was reportedly ‘turned away’ by Sweat’s current team, the Arizona Cardinals, though, which is yet another devastating blow for the franchise.
“Yes, the Cowboys did call on Sweat yesterday, but were turned away,” The Packer Report’s Easton Butler reported Tuesday. "TB (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) sent an offer of a 4th, but were denied. Sweat wants Green Bay (Packers), and if that fizzles out, the Eagles are his #2.”
While it’s unclear why trade talks between the Cowboys and Cardinals quickly fell through, one could infer that Dallas wasn’t willing to go the extra mile to acquire Sweat, leaving them no choice but to move on to other interested franchises.
Based on Butler’s report, it appears as if the Sweat sweepstakes will come down to two NFC contenders, the Packers and Eagles. From the Cowboys’ perspective, the best-case scenario would be Sweat avoiding the urge to reunite with Dallas’ NFC East rival and joining the Packers.
Still, there’s no doubt that the idea of the former Pro Bowler edge rusher getting traded to either organization wouldn’t thrill the Cowboys in any way, shape, or form.
