The NFL is full of shocking developments, as evidenced by the Baltimore Ravens’ decision to rescind their trade for Las Vegas Raiders star Defensive end Maxx Crosby on Tuesday night.
According to a recent trade rumor from Cowboys Report’s Tom Downey, the Dallas Cowboys could be a part of another shocking offseason move, citing that an intra-division trade with the New York Giants could soon interest the six-time Super Bowl champions.
“Kayvon Thibodeaux, he’s been linked out there, he’s the odd man out because they have Brian Burns and they have Abdul Carter,” Downey stated Thursday. “Thibs would be the guy that doesn’t fit long-term, and he’s going to be due a new contract soon. The Cowboys loved him coming out of Oregon, by the way.”
“The reported value from some of their (Giants) reporters is maybe a fourth-round pick, so 112 or a 92 might be enough. Although he’s due $14.75 million, a lot of money, and it would be an intra-division trade, which doesn't happen that often."
"However, the Cowboys and Giants did do it once with Jordan Phillips. This would be a very Cowboys-type move, but one I would have interest in.”
Thibodeaux has the potential to wreak havoc as a high-motor edge rusher for years to come. The Oregon product’s blend of speed and strength makes it challenging to contain regularly.
It’s worth noting that Thibodeaux wasn’t great with New York last season, though, as he only recorded 38 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, and failed to force a fumble in 10 games (he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in late December).
Still, when Thibodeaux is at his best, he’s a game-changer in every way imaginable. The 25-year-old finished his breakout 2023-24 campaign with 76 tackles, 11.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles in 17 games.
Although it’s unlikely to witness the Giants trade him, and to a division foe at that, the Cowboys should monitor his situation closely in New York as the offseason progresses.
