The Dallas Cowboys are undoubtedly among the top franchises to monitor as the 2026-27 season begins.
Although the Cowboys have a roster capable of dethroning the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East and securing their first division title since 2023, they’ll have a prime opportunity to make a franchise-elevating in-season trade to help put them over the top.
According to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, the organization has ‘serious room financially to make a trade’, alerting fans that completing a game-changing deal could be a matter of time.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer agrees, citing that he believes the five-time Super Bowl champions could target a defensive stud to ensure they’re no longer the laughingstock of the NFL on that side of the ball (they allowed a league-worst 30.1 points per game and recorded a measly 31 sacks last season).
"The team has a really nice layer of talent, particularly on offense, in its starting 22,” Breer wrote Monday.
“But it also lacks depth. And with left tackle Tyler Guyton now seemingly rebounding and some optimism that the pass rush might be OK, adding a difference-maker on defense, maybe at cornerback and/or another rusher, would make sense between now and the trade deadline. If, of course, such an opportunity arises.”
Dallas’ aggressiveness on the trade market will most likely hinge on the progress made through the first few weeks of the upcoming campaign. If it’s evident the organization is more than a piece away from making noise in the loaded NFC, it would be surprising to witness them go all-out for an immediate impact defender.
If the Cowboys exhibit promise coming out of the gate and make it clear that a blockbuster trade would move them closer to Super Bowl contention, fans should expect Jones to make the necessary phone calls to help them land their defensive X-factor.
Whether it’s standout Las Vegas Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby or high-upside Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr., Dallas will have their fair share of high-profile targets this year.
